I suppose you are here because you are either enrolled in
the Theory of Knowledge class, or you are simply curious about the class as
either a Rancho student or someone visiting my home page. I hope you will
leave knowing more about TOK and how it fits into the educational scheme of
things at Rancho, in the IB world, and in the
world of education.

How do you learn to ride a bicycle?
You can read a book about riding a bicycle, you can listen to someone tell you how to ride a bicycle, and you can watch someone ride a bicycle.
Eventually, you have to get on the bicycle and ride it yourself.
If you fall off, you have to get back on the bicycle.
Once you learn to ride a bicycle, you never forget.

The Theory of Knowledge class is required for all students to earn the International Baccalaureate Full Diploma. It is unique to the International Baccalaureate program. As we examine the acquisition of knowledge in the class, we consider one series of questions repeatedly:
What
do you know?
How
do you know it?
Of
what significance is it?

THEORY
OF KNOWLEDGE is the key element in the educational philosophy of the IB;
its purpose is to stimulate critical reflection upon the knowledge and
experiences acquired both inside and outside the classroom, to evaluate the
bases of knowledge and experiences, and to develop a personal mode of thought
based on critical examination of evidence and argument.
***International Baccalaureate Subject Guide
The
IB is quite clear that TOK is not intended to pile on more knowledge for an IB
student. It is assumed that any candidate for the IB Diploma is already
receiving a wealth of knowledge in the other required classes. Instead, TOK is intended to give students
the tools to sort out and deal with that knowledge. Time needs to be spent
on reflection on the knowledge gained, how it was gained, and where it fits into
the larger sphere of what we know. The course is
unique to the IB Program and demonstrates IB's commitment to the full education
of the individual.

The knowledge we have acquired ought not to resemble a great shop without order, and without inventory; we ought to know what we possess, and be able to make it serve our need.

The genuine teacher differs from the pupil only in that he can learn better and that he more genuinely wants to learn. In all teaching, the teacher learns the most.

A teacher may get good, even astounding, results from his pupils while he is teaching them and yet not be a good teacher; because it may be that, while his pupils are directly under his influence, he raises them to a height which is not natural to them, without fostering their own capacities for work at this level, so that they immediately decline again as soon as the teacher leaves the classroom.
I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.
