Rancho Bernardo Wins County Academic League Championship

SAN DIEGO – The Rancho Bernardo High School academic team’s first

question in its county championship match Thursday night was about the

Masters Golf Tournament.  By the end of the evening, the Broncos had

earned championship caps in lieu of green jackets, and proved to be the

academic masters of San Diego County.

Rancho Bernardo, representing the North County Academic League,

defeated San Diego City League champion, Francis Parker, 109-53 in the

finals broadcast live on ITV from the San Diego County Office of

Education studios.  Earlier in the evening, the Broncos defeated Granite

Hills of the Grossmont League, 150-25, in a semi-final match.  Francis

Parker defeated South Bay champ, Southwest, 63-59 in the other

semi-final.

The Broncos came out swinging in the championship match, continuing

their hot streak from the semi-final and pulling out to a 32-0 lead

before the Lancers called a time-out just four minutes into the

competition.  Francis Parker was able to re-group and close to within

39-33 of Rancho Bernardo half-way through the 30-minute match.

The second half of the match was all Broncos, who, after having

earned the full eight points possible on consecutive   questions, held a

commanding 80-46 lead with seven minutes remaining.  From there, Rancho

Bernardo cruised to its 109-53 victory and the 2009 San Diego County

Championship.

The Broncos’ championship competitors consisted of Alex Chang, Andy

Leu, Oleg Stens, Zhao Zhang, and 2008 ‘Jeopardy!’ Teen Champion, Anurag

Kashyap.  Other members of the team include Jennifer Ding, Kevin gon,

Noopur Gupta, and Haochi Shi.

The first-year varsity coach of Rancho Bernardo is Yvonne Eibeck.

Coach Eibeck and the Broncos were presented the county championship

trophy by San Diego County Superintendent of Schools, Randy Ward, and

county board member, John Witt.
