match Thursday night was about the
Masters Golf Tournament. By the end of the evening, the Broncos had
earned championship caps in lieu of
green jackets, and proved to be the
academic masters of
Rancho Bernardo,
representing the North County Academic League,
defeated San Diego City League
champion, Francis Parker, 109-53 in the
finals broadcast live on ITV from
the San Diego County Office of
Education studios. Earlier in the evening, the Broncos defeated
Granite
Hills of the Grossmont League, 150-25, in
a semi-final match. Francis
Parker defeated
semi-final.
The Broncos came
out swinging in the championship match, continuing
their hot streak from the
semi-final and pulling out to a 32-0 lead
before the Lancers called a time-out
just four minutes into the
competition. Francis Parker was able to re-group and close
to within
39-33 of Rancho Bernardo half-way through
the 30-minute match.
The second half of
the match was all Broncos, who, after having
earned the full eight points
possible on consecutive questions, held
a
commanding 80-46 lead with seven
minutes remaining. From there, Rancho
Bernardo cruised to its 109-53 victory and the 2009
Championship.
The Broncos’
championship competitors consisted of Alex Chang, Andy
Leu, Oleg Stens, Zhao Zhang, and 2008
‘Jeopardy!’ Teen Champion, Anurag
Kashyap. Other members of the team include Jennifer
Ding, Kevin gon,
Noopur Gupta, and Haochi Shi.
The first-year varsity coach of Rancho Bernardo is Yvonne
Eibeck.
Coach Eibeck and
the Broncos were presented the county championship
trophy by San Diego County
Superintendent of Schools, Randy Ward, and
county board member, John Witt.
