Greetings!  Welcome to my personal home page. For my Rancho students, let me use this page to introduce myself and to give some useful information for class. For those of you who are just browsing, welcome to Rancho Buena Vista High School -- a great place to be for students and teachers.

Here are three of my favorite historical personages:  Albert Einstein, Groucho Marx and Mark Twain. What do they have in common? Brains, humor and a fantastic perspective on life.

And now, a favorite quote from each:

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. He who knows it not and can no longer wonder, no longer feel amazement, is as good as dead, a snuffed-out candle."
*Albert Einstein

"I would never belong to a club that would accept me as a member."
*Julius "Groucho" Marx

"Truth is stranger than fiction; fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities, truth isn't."
*Mark Twain

My Background

I was born at a very early age in San Diego County in what was then the village of La Jolla in the same year as the "Roswell Incident".  I was born just across the street from the beach, so from the start the Pacific Ocean was an important part of my life.  I grew up in the city of San Diego living in the Ocean Beach and Clairemont areas. I graduated from Clairemont High the same year that humans first walked in space.  I started to college at USC, spent two years in the US Army, then returned to school to graduate from the year that men last visited and walked on the moon.  I completed my teaching credential at Cal State Long Beach State while student teaching at Edison High in Huntington Beach. After substituting at several schools for a semester, I began teaching in the Huntington Beach Union High School District.  I taught 6 years at Edison High and 2 years at Ocean View High before moving back to north San Diego County to the city of Vista.  I taught six years at Vista High School and transferred to Rancho Buena Vista in 1988.  I am one of the few who taught the VHS Class of '88, the last graduating class when Vista was a one-high-school town, and the RBVHS Class of '89, Rancho's first graduating class. Both of my children are Rancho graduates:  Jeremy, Class of '97, graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 2001; and Jessica, Class of '99, graduated from California State University at Fullerton in 2003. Jeremy works for Scripps' Institute of Oceanography in San Diego in the Marine Physical Laboratory frequently working aboard their research ships, and Jessica is the Director of Marketing, Communication and Promotion for Hoag Hospital Foundation in Orange County, raising money to support the hospital and its causes through the Toshiba Classic PGA Golf Tournament and the Newport Breakers World Team Tennis competition. My wife, Cathy, teaches second grade at Alamosa Park Elementary School in Oceanside. She and I live in the city of Oceanside near Guajome County Park. At present, I teach A.P. European History and Theory of Knowledge.  Besides teaching at Rancho, I announce Longhorn Football and have done several championship games in football, basketball, softball and volleyball for CIF, San Diego Section. I am also the Moderator Coordinator for the North County Academic League designing and maintaining its web site.

Some of My Interests
In case you are curious about the real me, here are some of the things that I enjoy:  I absolutely love classic movies -- especially those from the '30s and '40s. I'm an avid reader, especially of history, and I am fascinated with the information, historical and other, that is available on the internet. Drama is another personal interest, and I occasionally find the time to act in community theatre with groups like Premiere Productions in Fallbrook. I also love to travel and take student groups to Europe every other summer with the next trip coming in 2008. As my announcing avocation above indicates, I am an avid sports fan, following baseball and football, especially. Finally, I have taken an interest in collecting anything having to do with the "Roswell Incident":  T-shirts, coffee mugs, alien figures, etc., from places like the International UFO Museum and Research Center in, guess where, Roswell, New Mexico. In the Summer of 2007, I went to the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Roswell Incident.
