GRADES

Mrs. Rosen

Chemistry I

This course is designed to provide students with the basic chemical principles, problem solving strategies, and process skills that will be used and built upon in other science courses at both the high school and college level.

Follow these tips for success:

  1. Follow directions
  2. Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings
  3. Follow all safety rules
  4. Be respectful of others, classroom, and equipment
  5. Do your best work
  6. Do not bring food or drinks to class

Consequences of not following the rules:

  1. Warning
  2. Loss of participation points
  3. Student / Teacher conference
  4. Detention
  5. Parent contact
  6. Referral to Counselor or Administrator

Class preparation:

You must come prepared to work everyday.  Participation points will be deducted if you do not have the materials necessary to work.  Please bring:

§         A 3 ring binder for this class, or a clearly labeled divider section

§         A blue or black pen, pencil, eraser, and lined notebook paper

§         A bound composition book with graph paper for your lab notebook

§         A spiral or bound composition notebook for your journal

§         Scientific calculator

§         Covered textbook – Glencoe Chemistry, Matter and Change

Participation:

Since this class is lab and activity oriented, participation is extremely important and will be reflected in a participation grade.  A student earns 100 points every three weeks.  Students earn daily points by being prepared and actively participating in class activities.  Points will be deducted for tardies, absences, or disruptive behaviors.  Excellence will be rewarded with extra credit.

Attendance:

Your attendance in class will play an important role in how successful you are in Chemistry.  Much of the class will involve labs, activities, and group work that can be difficult or impossible to make up.  If you are not there to participate, you will not earn participation points for that day.

  • Work assigned during an excused absence can be made up for full credit.  You have the same number of days absent to make up the work.
  • It is your responsibility to get the assignments and arrange to make up the work.  Assignments will be posted on the class website, and/or a study buddy is recommended.
  • If you attend Science tutoring after school or Saturday School, complete, and turn in all missed assignments after an excused absence your participation points will not be deducted.

Tardy Policy:

There will be a deduction of 5 participation points for each unexcused tardy.  The school tardy policy as outlined in the RBV Student Handbook will be followed.

Grading Policy:

Grades will be based on points earned by completion of all class assignments and participation.    Grades will be computed as a percentage of points earned out of the total possible points and will be based on the following scale:

A               90 – 100%

B                80 - 89%

C               70 – 79%

D               60 – 69 %

F    below 60%

  • There will be homework assigned approximately three nights a week.   We will also utilize an online homework service through the University of Texas for some homework assignments, more information will be given soon.  Internet access at home is helpful, but classroom and library computers can be used as well.
  • If an assignment is to be turned in after the due date, it must be complete.  Late work will be penalized 10% for each day it is late.  Once an assignment has been graded and returned to the class it can no longer be submitted as late work.
  • Additional help is available during lunch or after school.  Also there is science tutoring offered on Thursdays in room 129 from 2:30 – 3:30.

Citizenship:

O         Comes to class prepared, participates in class, no tardies

S          Follows rules, comes prepared, up to two tardies

N         Disrupts class, not prepared for class, three or more tardies

U         Constantly disrupts the learning process of others, unsafe lab behavior

Extra Credit:

Extra credit assignments will be offered at various times throughout the year.  Extra credit will be applied to the overall class grade and not individual assignments.

This is required to remain in your Chemistry notebook for reference throughout the year.  I’m looking forward to a great year. Thanks!   Mrs. Rosen
