Integrated Science II

Welcome to Integrated Science II, the second course in a two year sequence which incorporates concepts from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science.  This is a college preporatory course that with Integrated Science I satisfies the two year science graduation requirement and a combined one year of lab science for university “A-G” list.  This is an exciting course which has an investigative nature.  We will complete many labs, activities, projects, reports, and presentations involving course concepts.

Follow these tips for success:

  1. Follow directions
  2. Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings
  3. Follow all safety rules
  4. Be respectful of others
  5. Do your best work
  6. Do not bring food or drinks  to class

Consequences of not following the rules:

  1. Warning
  2. Loss of participation points
  3. Student / Teacher conference
  4. Detention
  5. Parent contact
  6. Referral to Counselor or Administrator

Class preparation:

The following materials will be required in class each day:

ü      Interactive science notebook – we will set this up the first week of class.  You will need a single subject spiral with 100 pages, preferably with 3 holes and no perforated pages.

ü      A 3 ring binder or section for this class in a binder for handouts

ü      Class workbooks (first book is free, but a fee will be charged to replace lost books)

ü      Pen (blue or black), pencil, and calculator

ü      Colored pencils and/or markers and glue may sometimes be needed at home

Participation:

Since this class is activity oriented, participation is extremely important.  This importance will be reflected in a participation grade.  A student can earn 100 points for each three week period.  Students earn daily points by being prepared and actively participating in class activities.  Points will be deducted for tardies, absences, or disruptive behaviors.  Excellence will be rewarded with extra points.

Attendance:

Your attendance in class will play an important role in how successful you are in Science.  Much of the class will involve labs, activities, and group work which can be difficult or impossible to make up.  If you are not there to participate, you will not earn participation points for that day.

  • Work assigned during an excused absence can be made up for full credit.  You have the same number of days absent to make up the work.
  • It is your responsibility to get the assignments and arrange a time to make up the work.  Check the class website and/or use a study buddy are recommendations.
  • If you attend Science tutoring after school or Saturday School, complete, and turn in all missed assignments after an excused absence your participation points will not be deducted.

Tardy Policy:

There will be a deduction of 5 participation points for each unexcused tardy.  The school tardy policy as outlined in the RBV Student Handbook will be followed.

Grading Policy:

Grades will be based on points earned by completion of all class assignments and participation.    Grades will be computed as a percentage of points earned out of the total possible points and will be based on the following scale:

A               90 – 100%

B                80 - 89%

C               70 – 79%

D               60 – 69 %

F    below 60%

  • Most assignments are completed in class.  Homework will vary from one to three days a week.
  • If an assignment is to be turned in after the due date, it must be complete.  Late work will be penalized 10% for each day it is late.  Once an assignment has been graded and returned to the class it can no longer be submitted as late work.
  • Additional help is available during lunch or after school.  Also there is science tutoring offered on Thursdays in room 129 from 2:30 – 3:30.

Citizenship:

O         Comes to class prepared, participates in class, no tardies

S          Follows rules, comes prepared, up to one tardy

N         Disrupts class, not prepared for class, two or more tardies

U         Constantly disrupts the learning process of others, unsafe lab behavior

Extra Credit:

Extra credit assignments will be offered at various times throughout the year.  Extra credit will be applied to the overall class grade and not individual assignments.

This is required to remain in your Science notebook for reference throughout the year.  .  I’m looking forward to a great year.

                                                            Thanks!

                                                            Mrs. Rosen
