3/24, 25/09 Apartheid song: "Silver & Gold."  Begin reading "My Children, My Africa!"  Journal:  1.  Describe Isabel.  What kind of person is she?  List 2 adjectives that describe her character and support those descriptions with examples.   2.  Isabel says, “I’m greedy.  I want more.  I want as much as I can get.”  What does she mean?  What does she want? 3.  Describe an eye opening experience where you realized the world is bigger than you.   Pick at least 2 topics.  Write at least 1 page.

9/8/08 Writing Portfolio Swap Day:  Go to your 11th grade English teacher and get your writing portfolio.  Journal:  Review the essays and assignments in your portfolio, including the teacher's comments.  What are your strengths as a writer?  What do you need to work on?  Write a goal for yourself as a writer.  Begin (Daily Language Workout) DLW page 4 & 6.  Read "Like a Girl," by  Rebecca Babagain and "School Style," by  Jessie Cooper.  Complete analysis sheet for the two stories.

9/5/08 SSR & Journal:  Describe a place that means a lot to you.  In addition to the location, use as much descriptive detail as you can to paint a picture of it with words.  Read and discuss "One Remembers Most What One Loves," by  Asiya S. Tschannerl.   Individually read "That morning on the Prairie," by James C. Schaap, and " The Stream in the Ravine," by Nicole Suurdt.  Complete Analysis sheet for last two stories.
9/4/08 SSR & Journal:  write about an influential person in your life. (7-10 sentence paragraph)    Read and discuss "A Vision Beyond Time and Place," M. Scott Momaday as a class.  Individually read "My Father: Swiss Alpine Guide," by  Michelle Meyer, and  "He Knew," by Rosie Reid.  Complete Analysis sheet for last two stories.
9/2, 3/08 You must have an SSR book in class today.  SSR.  Journal: Write about an obstacle you've had to overcome or a challenge you've had to face.  Describe or narrate it.  How did you deal with it?  Review rhetorical strategies.  Read "This I believe essay: Jazz is the Sound of God Laughing."  Essay Analysis as a class.  Read four more essays: #1   #2   #3   #4.   Essay analysis in small groups.  Review class outline.  Discuss grammar plan for the year.

8/29/08 Finish discussion from "Of Dogs and Men."  Journal: Describe the musical style that you listen to the most.  What artists influence or inspire you the most? (7-10 sentence paragraph)   Read and discuss "Black Guy, White Music."
8/28/08 Journal: Write about an experience with an animal. What was your relationship to the animal? Your pet, someone else’s pet, or maybe an animal at the zoo. What was unique about this animal? Was it a mean animal? Did it do funny things? Describe it in detail. (7-10 sentence paragraph)  Notes on the reflective personal narrative.  Read the article "Of Dogs and Men."  In small groups, define unknown words in the article & underline reflective statements.
