Principal's Message - February 2010

Dear RBV families,

With the start of second semester of the school year, we have entered the season of state mandated testing.  During the coming months, our students will take several tests of special significance.

The California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) will be given to all 10th grade students on March 16 and 17, 2010.  Students must pass these exams in language arts and in math as a part of their high school graduation requirements.

Additionally, starting late April, 9th, 10th and 11th grade students will take a series of California Standards Tests (CST) in English, math, social studies and science.  The CST testing this year will be managed somewhat differently than it has been in the past few years.  This year students will test in their English, math, social studies and science classes, being supervised by the teachers of those subject areas. The testing cycle will begin April 20, with the test in English/Language Arts, and will end on May 14, with the social studies test.   Some tests will require two testing days and some only one.  Additionally, students will experience breaks between each subject area test dates.  Thus, the test in English/Language Arts will begin on April 20; the science test, on April 27; the math test, on May 3; and the social studies test, on May 13. More specific information about the test days and general bell schedule during the CST testing window will be soon published on the RBV web-site.

Students’ performance on the CSTs is important for your student, for RBV and for our entire school district for the following reasons:

• Test results can predict future problems and help the school and family work together to improve your student’s learning.   
• Test results inform the teacher about areas where each student needs additional teaching or support. Without this information, teachers cannot take into account the unique needs of each child.
• Based upon students’ performance on these tests, our school, RBV, is ranked by the state and compared to other schools.
• Our students’ test results help determine whether our district meets performance indicators articulated by the federal No Child Left Behind act.
• RBV’s general scores and ranking is published on the web and in the news media. 
• Strong performance by RBV students impacts the image of our school in Vista and by universities.  At times, universities consider the school’s general performance on these tests as they evaluate a student’s application to be admitted to the university.

Because these tests are so important for your students and our school, we ask that students make every effort to attend school on all state mandated testing days so we can provide for them a comfortable testing environment.  One of the measurements used to evaluate our performance on these tests is the number of students who actually take the test.  Therefore, it is crucial that all RBV students required to take those tests attend school to take the CAHSEE and the CSTs on the assigned dates.   Please mark the test days on your calendar, and encourage your students to have a good night rest prior to the test and a healthy breakfast the morning of the test. 

I truly believe that if every student on our campus will do his or her personal best, students’ performance will illustrate to our local community and the entire state of California the learning that takes place at RBV.

Estimadas familias de RBV,

Con la apertura del segundo semestre del año escolar, hemos empezado la temporada de exámenes obligados por el estado.  Dentro los próximos meses, nuestros estudiantes van a tomar varios exámenes de alta importancia.

El Examen de Egreso de la Preparatoria de California (conocido en inglés como CAHSEE) se les administrara a la clase del grado 10 el 16 y 17 de Marzo, 2010.  Los estudiantes tienen que aprobar la porción de Artes del Lenguaje Ingles y la de matemáticas para cumplir con un requisito de graduación.

Adicionalmente, empezando en Abril, estudiantes del grado 9, 10, y 11, tomaran una serie de Exámenes de los Estándares de California, o CST en inglés, en las materias de Ingles, Matemáticas, Ciencias Sociales, y Ciencia.  Los exámenes CST serán administrados un poco diferentes a los años pasados.  Este año los estudiantes tomaran sus exámenes dentro de sus respectivos salones de matemáticas, ingles, ciencia, y ciencias sociales con los maestros que tienen ahora.  La ronda de exámenes comenzara el 20 de Abril, con el examen de Ingles/Artes de Lenguaje, y se terminara el 14 de Mayo, con el examen de Ciencias Sociales.  Habrá exámenes que duraran un día, y otros que duraran dos para terminarse.  Los estudiantes también tendrán días de descanso entre los exámenes de cada materia.  Como consecuencia, el examen de Ingles/Artes de Lenguaje será el 20 de Abril, mientras que el examen de Ciencia será el 27 de Abril, el de Matemáticas el 3 de Mayo, y finalmente el de Ciencias Sociales el 13 de Mayo.  Tendremos mas información publicada en nuestro sitio de Internet con más detalles sobre el horario de exámenes incluyendo las fechas de los exámenes y las horas del día.

El desempeño de cada estudiante en los exámenes CST es importante para su estudiante, para RBV, y para nuestro distrito entero por las siguientes razones:

• Los resultados de los exámenes pueden predecir problemas en el futuro y ayudar a la escuela y sus familias trabajar en sincronía para mejorar el aprendizaje de cada alumno.
• Cada estudiante recibe un reporte individual que se pone en uso por los maestros para determinar las necesidades de ellos.
• El estado de California usa los resultados para evaluar el programa académico de la escuela y compararnos a otras preparatorias.
• Los resultados de los exámenes ayudaran a la escuela determinar si hemos cumplido con los indicadores de desempeño articulados por el acto federal, Ningún Niño Dejado Atrás, (No Child Left Behind).
• Los resultados serán publicados en el periódico local y también por Internet.
• Debido a los resultados, RBV tendrá una propia clasificación.  Las universidades del estado comparara la clasificación de RBV contra las demás preparatorias del estado durante el evaluó de aplicaciones.  Con el resultado positivo de cada estudiante, podemos asegurar que el estado y toda la nación considere RBV como una escuela de alto desempeño.
